When I was 23 I had a job bussing/hosting at a restaurant. A new girl started there. It was her first food service job and she was straight out of college. One night she said to me, " You know, I don't know if I can do this martha. I mean, these people only see me as a hostess, as their servant. They don't know me, they don't know I love to dance!" I had to laugh. I mean, I was thinking, " You don't want them to know anything about you! That's your only protection- the fact that they don't know anything about you." But afterwards I reflected on it and I realized up until that moment I had no idea how many walls I had put up over the course of my 8 years (now ten!) in customer service. your story illustrates beautifully how experience shapes personality.
