The former used to mean a spirit (rather than just a malevolent one) and the latter meant holy, sacred or spiritual. The word spirit came from latin and has modern cognates such as Spanish "espiritu". (the same thing happened to the word "worm" used to mean a large snake or dragon {dragon being a French loan word})</description>
