Yes, I think your Dreamself does its job when it successfully haunts you into the daytime. That also sounds like a really evocative dream.

I see. I often find that I find that out of everything that happens that I can or can't remember there are usually at least one or two dream images a night that "haunt" me all day long either because they are particularly quirky or particularly emotional in some way. Last night I had some version of the reoccuring fucked up baby/animal dream in which I'm require to take care of some disgusting creature. I gave the child a pair of my underwear to wear and a new pair for myself as well. Then right before I woke up I dreamed I was listening to an ipod through me teeth. I bit down on the earphones back near my wisdom teeth and the sound traveled through me jaw. My rational self questioned this a bit even as I was doing it, but I thought it rather satisfying because those ear things never stay in my ears anyway.

Well, see, if you described dumpsters as "sticky, smelly, dirty" places (which would tell me how you experience them as a metaphor), and then told me "but in the dream it all looked so shiny and clean for some reason" with a kinda confused expression, I would respond with: "in your waking life, do know of a place that usually, or in other situations, would posses sticky, smelly, dirty qualities, but for some reason it looks all shiny and clean, either right now. or recently?"

You just use everything the dreamer says. Paradoxes, exceptions, contradictions, all of those count as part of the dream language - your shiny clean dumpster would stand out as a negation of your metaphor of a normal dumpster, which would help you figure out the thing in your waking life that it refers to. Yasee? I always want to know about your experiences with dumpsters, and we start there.

If you gave me an encyclopedia or textbook definition of a dumpster, now I couldn't do anything with that, because it wouldn't have anything to do with your personal metaphors. I run into that problem a lot, including when I interview myself!

Ah, okay. I have one more question. When exploring a symbol in a dream, say the dumpster, how much emphasis do i put on what the thing was like in the dream vs. what its like in general. Let's say dumpsters in general are sticky smell places, but i dream about a very clean shiny dumpster. I know delaney asks "how is it different" but how do you work that difference into the interpretation?
