Ha ha. Yeah, if it ain't broke...I even have the white rock example on video. I may post it sometime.

As for the rest - I know - the emergent properties of the game continue to astound me. Good luck with your groups!

I love how the example we used at the workshop ("That White Rock" vs. "That Rock White") has now essentially been canonized as the example explanation for this technique. :-D

Roughly half of the attendees of this workshop have now agreed to meet bi-monthly or so for WAYK Spanish classes. In fact, so many people wanted to play that we'll probably have two games running at once for our first gathering.

One of the brilliant things about this game is that those two games don't have to be in the same place or time--I don't have to worry about scheduling everyone to show up at the same place at once. I can instead focus on meetings of smaller groups more frequently, and we can travel between individual games played with different subsets of our total WAYK Spanish community.

For somone used to finding the *one* time when everyone will show up, this is the greatest blessing I could possibly ask for--show up when you can, don't worry about being a completist, and know you're not missing anything you can't pick up later.

Bjoeð:

Half-way through the video Evan talks about this (I know you can't hear the audio well) - give it another listen for what he says. I'll summarize it too: essentially, it does matter in signed language, but since we use the sign as a carrier for the spoken language, the sign defers to the spoken grammar. Hence, deferring to English:
[THAT] [WHITE] [ROCK]

Deferring to Spanish
[THAT] [ROCK] [WHITE]

Etc. As far as how simple it feels at advanced level...well, you really have to play the game to discover that. You just keep playing, and playing, and playing... :D

This game made me excited, yes, and i wonder how you would go about if the talking language has a different ''word'' order than the signed one?

Or doesen't this order matter in the signed language? I could see myself using the signs in this video in any order like [THAT] [MY] [STICK], or [MY] [THAT] [STICK], and i wonder if it feels this simple when the signs get a bit more ''advanced'' too?

Thanks <3

Matt:

I need to switch it out for one with corrected credits (got a couple of names wrong). Sorry about the wait; it'll take an hour or two.

I was hoping to watch the video, but it seems to be missing. If it's intentional are you hoping/planning to repost later? I'm definitely interested in WAYK both for myself (I would like to learn Tlingit, the local native language) and for my kids.

Thanks

Eric-
Thanks for the kudos! And I look forward to playing our way through the fluency revolution together. :D I'd really hoped that we could get a video out as quickly as possible that would give folks, finally, a picture of the game and how it works. You can see now why I never bothered to "explain" it. It reminds me of that high school assignment to write instructions to somehow on how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich - a nearly impossible task!

Jay-
Terrible videography - check, terrible - sound check. :) You know, I studied video production for four years in high school...apparently it didn't stick. :)

Thanks too for your excitement - it really makes a difference to me to know that this video met the goal of communicating the coolness of WAYK! Whee!

Wow, it's amazing! I was hopeful before I saw this, but I'm blown away by how cool this is.

Keep it up!

(And I hope you can get a mic on Evan's shirt and a tripod soon... and maybe a higher res picture. All in good time.)

To see it in action, now, means EVERYTHING. Where before there was confusion, now I just find my mind exploding with ideas on how to apply this. Thanks so much for posting this, Willem. I'm really hoping I can contribute to the success of your videographing project with a donation SOON. :)

Meanwhile, I'll just crow about you, WAYK and so on to everyone who will listen.
